It performs the same function as a standard star delta starterreducing the motors starting current by initially starting in star connection and then switching to delta connection for normal operationbut is enclosed in a robust flameproof (explosion-proof) enclosure.

The flameproof enclosure is engineered to withstand internal explosions and prevent flames or sparks from igniting the surrounding atmosphere. The panel typically includes flameproof-rated contactors, timer, overload relay, MCB/MCCB, and push buttons or control devices.
